We sat down with Coach Cam—one of the calmest, most grounded presences on the gym floor—for a quick conversation about why he does what he does, what drives him, and what he hopes new members feel when they first walk into Geelong Fitness.
True to his nature, he opened the chat with a grin and a classic one-liner.
Give us your best Dad joke to start off?
“Oh, which one? Put me on the spot—I’ve got a few good ones. I mean, the good old, oldie one is: I went to bed last night wondering where the sun went… then it dawned on me.”
What do you love most about coaching?
“One of the passions I’ve got with it all is to see people push their limits and be able to achieve new things—and that makes me happy, seeing them progress. And that’s why I love coaching.”
What do you want people to feel when they walk into your class?
“They’re probably less confused than they normally pretend to be, but excited and ready for whatever comes. Like, I want them to come in not really sure what’s going to happen, but know they’re going to get a good workout, going to have good vibes—it’s going to be a really fun and productive workout.”
What kind of results have you seen from members you’ve coached?
“I’ve just even recently seen increasing strength, which has been great—to see that they’re willing to try a bit heavier, try a bit more challenging weights, and surprising themselves.”
“There’s been plenty of results on that goals board with people achieving sort of extraordinary things—whether it be runs, walks, events, just general fitness. It’s just been great to see.”
What would you say to someone who is nervous to start?
“I say if you’re nervous, it means you care. So it’s probably not a bad thing to be nervous, because everyone’s nervous starting something new. But the hardest part is walking in the door. Once you walk in the door, everything becomes a little bit easier.”
“You’ll realise, particularly here, the environment is great. The environment is amazing. It’s very uplifting. And if it’s not your thing, it’s not your thing. But the one way to find out is to give it a try.”
Why do you love coaching at Geelong Fitness?
“It’s just the people at Geelong Fitness. From coaching through to every member—the vibe is great, the energy is electric at times. You’re always going to have a laugh. You always feel like you’re at home. And it’s just a place you can come to and you go, ‘Take a breath… this is where I want to be. This is the perfect place for me.’”
