There’s a growing trend in the fitness industry where energy is mistaken for expertise. Loud music, clapping, and a sea of high-fives can give the illusion of a great session—but energy alone does not equal coaching. At Geelong Fitness, we’re here to pull back the curtain and help you understand the real difference between group cheerleading and professional coaching. Because when your goals matter, so should the quality of coaching that gets you there.
Group Cheerleading Feels Good. Coaching Gets Results.
It’s easy to get swept up in a class that feels exciting. A fun playlist and an instructor shouting motivational quotes can leave you buzzing—but once the sweat dries, the question remains: did you actually get better? Did you lift with better form? Did someone help you move safer, stronger, and with purpose?
Cheerleading might make you feel good in the moment. Coaching, when done well, builds lasting confidence and results over time.
What Real Coaching Looks Like
At Geelong Fitness, coaching is not something that happens to the group—it happens to the individual. Real coaching is personal. It’s hands-on. It’s grounded in education and focused on long-term progress. Every session at our gym includes three non-negotiables: correction, feedback, and individualisation.
Correction means your coach is paying attention. Not just to your attendance but to your movement. We’re looking at your technique, your posture, your breathing, and how your body responds under load. If something is off, we step in—not to embarrass you, but to guide you.
Feedback is immediate. It’s not saved for an email or a performance review. If your squat is collapsing at the bottom, your coach is next to you, giving cues that actually make sense. We’re not watching from the corner of the room. We’re in it with you.
Individualisation means that even in a group class, your program still fits your level. If you’ve had a shoulder injury, you’re not expected to push through it. We scale. We modify. We build pathways that keep you safe while still making progress.
What Group Cheerleading Misses
When a session is built around hype instead of coaching, members are often left behind. The new person who’s unsure about their form goes unnoticed. The strong member who could be lifting heavier never gets pushed. The person nursing an old injury gets no adjustment. In these sessions, everyone moves as one—and no one gets better.
There’s a difference between support and substitution. Encouragement is good, but it should never replace quality coaching. At Geelong Fitness, we don’t swap knowledge for noise.
Coaching Is an Investment, Not a Vibe
Our coaches are trained to teach. They’re not just here to cheer you on. They’re here to see you, know your story, and walk beside you as you progress. That kind of service takes time, care, and skill. It’s not found in just playlists and sweaty selfies—it’s found in the moments when you learn something new about your body and realise what you’re capable of.
And when that happens, you don’t need hype. You’ve got belief.
